The Lakeland Community College Police Department will conduct Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 26, at 12:00 noon in front of the Athletic Fitness Center (AFC). In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in the AFC Lobby.
A flag disposal will take place after the ceremonies. Flags can be dropped off at the Lakeland Police Department daily from 9:00 to 5:00 before the disposal.
The Fighting Falcons of the 178th Fighter Wing out of Springfield, Ohio, will conduct a Fly-Over. VFW 4796 and VVNW Post OH-07 will create a combined color guard unit for a rifle salute.
Air Force Vietnam veteran Ken Iwashita, a Lakeland Trustee, will be the Keynote Speaker. Raymond McGuinness, A Marine Corps Korean War veteran and a Lakeland Trustee, will present a wreath and give the closing remarks.
Chief James T. McBride of the Lakeland Police will play the opening music on the bagpipes. A Vietnam Era veteran, he will also serve as master of ceremonies. Kirtland Police Chief Wayne Baumgart, a U.S. Army veteran, will sing the National Anthem. Commander Ken Bollam, U.S. Navy, retired, will perform the Navy Hymn. Paul DiFranco, U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran will perform TAPS.
The Col. Justice Chambers Detachment of the Marine Corps League Color Guard in Mentor will post the colors.
An opening reflection will be offered by Jack Platz, a U.S. Army veteran and retired Lakeland faculty member.
Morris W. Beverage, Jr., President of Lakeland Community College, will make the welcoming remarks. Lakeland student leader Oloho Delano will speak for students. Ray Reiblein, an U.S. Army Vietnam veteran will remember POWs.
Memorial Day ceremonies at Lakeland have been planned by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4796 of Wickliffe, Veterans of the Vietnam War Inc. OH-7 of Eastlake, the Col. Justice Chambers Detachment of the Marine Corps League of Mentor, and Lakeland Community College.
