The 2010 International Film Series at Lakeland kicks off on January 29, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. with the theme “United We Laugh – Comedy Without Borders.”
The film screenings are subtitled in English and will run from January 29 – March 5 on Fridays in the H-101 auditorium at 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Films are subtitled in English.
A local scholar will introduce the 7:30 p.m. showings of the movies with a brief discussion on the film’s context in the country’s culture and history.
Please be advised that all films contain mature themes and may not be suitable for all audiences.
Cafe Internationale Dinners Optional dinner packages are available preceding all shows, for $25 per person (movies are free). Dinners will be at 6 p.m. at Breakers dining hall and feature corresponding menus for the films from Norway (Jan. 29), Italy (Feb. 5), Russia (Feb. 19), Germany (Feb. 26), and Spain (Mar. 5). A young, carefree billboard hanger has his world turned upside down when his girlfriend leaves him for her boss, a TV producer. Somehow his never-meant-to-be-public videos end up being a hit on TV causing problems with his best friend.
A woman decides to vacation in Greece with her 14-year-old niece as a way to forget her recent breakup. However, her niece decides the time is right to lose her virginity and ends up eyeing the man her aunt just broke up with.
February 19
Russia (2008) Absurdistan 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Inspired by real events, the film follows two teenage sweethearts whose plans are thrown into peril as the women in their village prepare to go on a sex strike against the men. The reason? They have been too lazy to fix the broken water pipes.
February 26
Germany (2003) Good Bye Lenin! 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
A German woman awakes from a heart attack induced coma in what she thinks is still East Berlin. Afraid that she’ll suffer another heart attack and die, her son keeps the truth about the fall of the Berlin Wall from her and a series of comical events unfold as he desperately hopes that she won’t notice that times have changed.

Spain (2004) Only Human 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
When a Spanish family finds out the true origins of their daughter’s boyfriend, strange things begin to happen. After a block of frozen soup is thrown out a window and possibly kills someone, the father goes missing (and affair?) and a cover-up ensues.
