To meet the workforce demand for pharmacy technicians, the Lakeland Community College Continuing Education department is offering a new pharmacy technician training program beginning Jan. 19. An information session will be held on Thursday, Jan. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. in room T-129 on the main campus in Kirtland.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the demand for pharmacy technicians is projected to grow nationally to over 30 percent throughout the next five years.
Lakeland's first pharmacy technician training program will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Jan. 19 through April 29 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on the main campus. The program is designed for students interested in becoming a pharmacy technician, pre-pharmacy students, and those in the healthcare field looking to strengthen their current skills.
The 105-hour, non-credit program covers the fundamentals and specifics of becoming a pharmacy technician, including an extended module on pharmacy technician calculations.
Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in the packaging and mixing of prescriptions, inventory control and purchasing, and helping to maintain client records and referring clients for consultation with the pharmacist.
