Yvonne Pointer Women's Center Date Posted: Friday, November 06, 2009 Topic: Activist, author, writer, and philanthropist Yvonne Pointer to kick off Women’s Center’s Twentieth Anniversary
Yvonne Pointer suffered what no mother should ever have to endure. Her oldest daughter, Gloria, was abducted, raped, and murdered in 1984. Since the brutal death of her daughter, she has worked tirelessly toward making communities safer.
Pointer will kick off the Lakeland Community College Women’s Center Twentieth Anniversary celebration in honor of women helping women with her moving lecture, “Overcoming Adversity: How One Woman Turned Tragedy into Purpose,” slated for Thursday, November 12 at 7 p.m. in the main college campus in room H-101. The event is free to the public by registering at 440-525-7322.
Pointer is often called upon to give words of consolation to individuals and families victimized by violence. She is the co-founder of P.A.C.K (Parents Against Child Killing), the founder of Positive Plus Women's Support Group, and an active member of P.O.M.C. (Parents of Murdered Children), as well as a mentor in the Cleveland City Schools.
As a direct result of her work, Pointer has received numerous recognitions including appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show, inducted into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame by former Governor George Voinovich, awarded the 908th Point of Light national tribute to Americans who made positive differences by then president George H. W. Bush, and was a featured speaker at the Essence Award Ceremony at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Pointer is no stranger to Lakeland Community College; in 1994 she was honored with a Women's Center's Woman of Achievement Award.
She is the author of several books including “Behind the Death of a Child,” “Word From the Mother,” and “Two Dollars in my Pocket.”
