Hundreds of job opportunities at Lakeland Career Expo Nov. 11

The competition for jobs is fierce. Job hunters have had to rely not only on the skills they are selling, but also on their job hunt savvy in order to compete with the next person. One way to do this is to make a great first impression with employers at job fairs.

Lakeland is hosting the fourth annual Career Expo on Wednesday, November 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Athletic and Fitness Center on the college’s campus. Employers at the event will be looking for both degreed and skilled job candidates. The event is free and open to the public.

One mistake many people make is not being dressed appropriately to meet employers. “We cannot stress enough the importance of dressing professionally,” said Nancy White, director of Lakeland's Career Services Center. “Employers who have attended our past expos have routinely expressed the importance of making a good first impression."

Job seekers can find examples of appropriate attire, additional job fair success advice, and a list of positions and employers attending the expo at www.careers.lakelandcc.edu/careerexpo.

Another first impression mistake White sees many job seekers make is not researching the companies that will be attending. "Employers are turned off when candidates approach their table and ask 'What does your company do?'” said White. “It pays to do a little research ahead of time about the companies you plan to connect with at the expo."
