The Lakeland Community College Women’s Center aims to increase awareness of Women in Science and Engineering (W.I.S.E) to potential female engineering students by tapping into their problem-solving abilities. “Engineering Exploration Day” is slated for Saturday, October 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the E Building. The event is free, but registration is required. Space is limited; to register call 440-525-7322.
The Engineering Exploration Day is sponsored in part by the American Association of University Women with the aim of introducing and exposing more women into a traditionally male dominated field.
The day-long event will consist of fun activities that help women of all ages decide if they have the knack to pursue engineering as a career. Participants can try their hand at building a hovercraft and using pasta to build a bridge. They will also learn about career opportunities in engineering and speak with a panel of female engineers as well as current students.
“Our goal is to target recent high school graduates and especially mid-life women,” said Mary Goss-Hill, program coordinator at Lakeland’s Women’s Center. “Many can’t decide what they’d like to do, and others have a negative self-talk that hinders them from achieving their desired goal. As a matter of fact, age doesn’t matter and we’re here to prove that.”
Lakeland offers an Associate of Applied Science in engineering technologies including civil, electronic, and mechanical engineering, and many more.
