Printer Friendly Version: New course this fall helps students learn a ratings system that measures “green” buildings
With environmental trends leaning “green” more than ever, the department of Civil Engineering Technology at Lakeland Community College is offering a new course this fall, “Green Building and LEED Rating Systems,” which begins August 27 on Thursdays at 5:15 p.m. Students in the course will learn to define and measure “green buildings” according to the LEED Green Building Rating System. This course will also help students prepare for the LEED Professional Accreditation Exams.

LEED is recognized internationally as the leading green building certification system. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.

Course instructor Gerald C. Flanik is an ICC-Certified Building Official, LEED Accredited Professional and holds Ohio certifications as building official, electrical plans examiner, building inspector, electrical safety inspector and is licensed by the Division of State Fire Marshal for fire protection systems. Flanik currently serves as the chief building official for Lake County and the State of Ohio Building Department. His career began with Pipefitters Local 120 in Cleveland, Ohio where he has been a member for over 25 years. Flanik holds a degree in Civil Engineering Technology and is a part-time member instructor for Lakeland Community College in the Civil Engineering Department. Flanik teaches multi-disciplinary courses for the International Code Council, Ohio Building Officials Association and the State of Ohio Board of Building Standards for continuing education of code enforcement personnel.
