Lakeland only community college in the nation to participate
Lakeland student members of the Model UN/NATO Club took home awards at the 24th Annual Model UN/NATO in Washington D.C. held this February. The first award went to Nicole Metoyer (Hudson) for "Outstanding Delegation in Committee" for her work on portraying Slovenia on the Nuclear Planning Group. The second award, an "Honorable Mention - Outstanding Overall Delegation" went to the entire Slovenia Delegation across committees/council: Pablo Villa (Windsor), Amanda Lewis (Painesville), Spencer Luckwitz (Eastlake), Nicole Metoyer, and Anthony DeSantis (Willoughby).
The Model UN/NATO Conference is a national yearly event where Lakeland students compete against their peers from a number of other institutions (including Canada and Italy) to debate a number of agenda items for the countries that each represents. The simulated debates give students a perspective on issues and conflicts and an understanding of the complexities of international politics.
While in Washington, students visited the Slovenian Embassy and were led by Dr. Jennifer Forster, faculty advisor for the Model Un/NATO Club, director of the Center for International Education, and associate professor of history, along with Dr. Chris Skubby, professor of political science and co-advisor of the club. Lakeland was the only community college in the country to participate in this year's model.
Other Lakeland students who also participated in the trip to Washington D.C. were: Pam Joiner (Maple Heights), Scott Tucci (Montville), Brett Winslow (Mentor), Terence Check (Chesterland), and Andrew Check (Chesterland).
The Model UN/NATO Club at Lakeland facilitates and encourages interest and involvement in international politics. It is an extension of the Model UN/NATO (HIST/POLS 1905) course co-taught by Forster and Skubby at Lakeland.
