Lakeland Community College celebrates “Free College Day” with free classes for the Northeast Ohio community on Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The free, 45-minute classes will cover a variety of personal interest topics taught by faculty and instructors from the college. Classes are open seating; space is limited.

New this year will be classes to educate the community about ways to conserve energy and protect the environment. Participants will have a unique opportunity to learn from national experts on alternative energy sources, energy efficiency, and best energy practices.

Recently, Lakeland partnered with international energy experts, Siemens Building Technologies, to undergo a $6.4 million energy project to significantly curb energy costs over the next 10 years.

“Our campus will soon be running at optimal efficiency, saving money and resources in the long run,” said Mike Mayher, vice president for administrative services at Lakeland. “We’re using our experience and everything we have learned from this process to educate the community.”

Mayher and a Siemens national business development manager will present a class on best energy practices for businesses and institutions during Lakeland's Free College Day.

Other free “green” and “energizing” classes this year include:
- 25 simple, low-cost ways to make a positive impact on our fragile Earth
- How to produce a healthy lawn which requires less water, fertilizer and gasoline in your mower
- Alternative energy sources and their advantages and disadvantages

In addition to classes about energy and the environment, Lakeland will offer free general interest classes to energy your mind, body, soul, career, and wallet. Popular classes include "History of Three Stooges," "Pet Massage," and “Savvy Shopper with the Coupon Guy."

For those looking for a job, the college is offering a free Resume Writing Workshop plus free classes on "What Do I Do Now?", "How Do I Sell Myself in this Market?", and "Fire Your Boss: Work from Home."

All participants will receive a free energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulb while supplies last, courtesy of Siemens. Free lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Courses offered at Lakeland's Free College Day 2009 are posted on lakelandcc.edu/freecollegeday.
