If you could, would you want to know how long you had to live?

International bestselling author and journalist David Ewing Duncan brings his “Experimental Man Road Show” to the Cleveland area on Thursday, April 30.

In his new book, "Experimental Man" (Wiley, March 2009), Duncan explores cutting-edge technologies in personalized medicine by submitting himself as the “guinea pig.” He chronicles his personalized investigation, examining his genes, environment, brain, and body. Through this process, Duncan receives startling news about his own potential longevity in a first-time-ever test that prompts a basic philosophical question: Do we really want to know so much about ourselves?

The Experimental Man (experimentalman.com) is a joint project of the Center for Life Science Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. Duncan has been a special correspondent and producer for ABC's "Nightline" and "20/20", and a producer for Discovery Television. He is a correspondent for "NOVA" on PBS, and has written for WIRED, Discover, Harper's Magazine, Atlantic Monthly, and Life, among others.

“David will be a wonderful educational asset as we engage our local students in STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics) studies and our entire community in the business, civic, economic, and personal opportunities available through biotechnology,” said event manager Karen Royer, who is also the biotech education coordinator at Lakeland Community College. “This year marks the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of his book The Origin of Species. We are excited to celebrate the science of evolution (Darwin) alongside the biotech revolution (Duncan) in 2009 - The Year of Science.”

Described as one of the “best explainers” of all time by television journalist Hugh Downs, Duncan is the bestselling author of "Masterminds-Genius, DNA and the Quest to Rewrite Life," and "Calendar." Duncan is also known for his work as chief correspondent of NPR Talk’s "Biotech Nation."
