The 2009 International Film Series at Lakeland Community College will kick off January 23 at 3:30 p.m. with the common theme of choice and circumstance.

Film screenings are free and open to the public and will run every Friday beginning January 23 - February 27 ( except February 13) in the H101 auditorium at 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Evening showings feature a brief introduction by a college scholar and are preceded by a dinner. Dinners are $20 per person and feature the cuisine of the film's country of origin. To register for the dinner, call 440-525-7116.

January 23
TAKE MY EYES, Spain (2006)
3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

"Take My Eyes" is a 2003 drama directed by Iciar Bollain who won the Goya award for Best Director in 2004. The film is an examination of spousal abuse and looks in depth at other family issues. "Take My Eyes" went on to win seven Goya Awards which are equivalent to the Academy Awards in the United States. The movie’s two stars won Best Lead Actor and Best Lead Actress for their performances.

January 30
THE SON, Belgium (2003)
3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

A divorced instructor at a vocational training school life is turned upside down by the arrival of a mysterious student. The relationship between the two characters strengthens as the film progresses. The instructor's former wife grows horrified when she is informed of the boy's arrival. A profoundly emotionally and morally complex situation unfolds resulting from the situation.

February 6
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (2001)
3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

"Kandahar" is a 2001 drama about a woman who returns to Afghanistan after receiving a letter from her sister. The letter reveals that the sister plans to take her own life. Once in Afghanistan, the sister realizes the impact the Taliban regime has had among its people. "Kandahar" is inspired by a true story.

February 20
ETERNITY & A DAY, Greece (1998)
3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

"Eternity & A Day" is about a Greek author who learns he does not have much time to live. Prior to checking himself into the hospital, he comes upon a young boy from Albania. The author spends the day assisting the boy in finding his way back home. This film won the Palme d'Or which is the highest prize for competing films at the Cannes Film Festival.

February 27
THE WILLOW TREE, Iran (2005)
3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

"The Willow Tree" is an Iranian film about a man who has been blind since his early childhood. Years later, successful, married, and with a daughter, the man regains his sight at a Paris clinic. Following the operation, his life changes dramatically and he views society differently.
