Lakeland Theatre will present Sunday in the Park with George between July 14 and July 30, 2006 for 11 performances. Stephen Sondheim wrote the music and lyrics and James Lapine wrote the book for this Tony Award-winning musical. This production of Sunday in the Park with George by Lakeland Theatre is the first professional production in Greater Cleveland in over twenty years and features an eleven-piece orchestra as well as several pieces of the original touring scenery designed by Tony Award winner Tony Straiges. Sunday in the Park with George, winner of two Tony Awards in 1984, is one of only seven musical plays to have won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Sunday in the Park with George takes a poignant and compelling look at Impressionist artist Georges Seurat and brings his “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte” to life. The musical is as much about watching a genius create his masterpiece as it is a commentary on the joys and frustrations of creating art in a commercial world. Sunday’s music and lyrics are achingly beautiful. Its songs include “Putting it Together”, “Children and Art” and “Sunday in the Park with George”.
Martin Friedman will direct Sunday. The musical director is Larry Goodpaster (fresh the Beck Center’s production of A Man of No Importance and Full Monty). The set and lighting designer is Keith Nagy (Hallie Theatre’s From Door to Door). Amiee Collier and Andrew Tarr are featured as Dot and George. Ms. Collier was most recently featured in the Beck Center’s production of Beauty and the Beast while Mr. Tarr starred in The Cleveland Public Theatre’s production of The Santaland Diaries. Sunday also boasts the talents of Mary Jane Nottage, Emma Wahl, and Don Irvin among a cast of 18. All tickets are reserved. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
