March 17, 2010
Cocoa Beach was plagued by rain and the first two days of the Lakers’ spring training schedule was cancelled.  However, the Lakers have managed to reschedule some games and pick up a few others to make up for the lost games.
The Lady Lakers have played three games in each of the last three days and are currently 7-2.
Three Lakers are currently batting .500 or better.  Taylor White leads the way at .545, followed by Leah Moore’s .522.  Diana Moorman is hitting .500 and has a home run.  Timely hitting is being provided by Moore and Megan Passwaiter, as each currently has ten RBI; and Moore has stolen 13 bases through these first nine games.
Passwaiter is also leading the pitching staff.  She currently has an ERA of .88 in 24 innings.  Through 13 innings, Katie Basmagy has an ERA of 1.66 ERA, while Shannon Cruz has a 2.72 ERA in 18 innings.
The team is fielding well, with an overall team fielding percentage of .915.
Three more games are scheduled for today.  The team opens its Ohio schedule against the JV team of Mount Union College, on Thursday, March 25 at 3:30 in Alliance.

March 15, 2010

Rain delayed the start of the Lady Lakers season in Cocoa Beach, Florida; but they won two of the three games that they played on their opening day.
Shannon Cruz pitched seven innings and gave up four earned runs in a 12-5 victory over Dupage CC.  Diana Moorman had four RBI on two singles and a triple, while Cruz knocked in three runs.
In a second victory over Dupage, the Lakers were down by one until the fifth inning when Cruz, Cierra Marshall and Breanna Wilson hit three straight singles to knock in three runs.  Sophomore Katie Basmagy got the win, giving up one earned run.
The Lakers ran out of gas in their third game of the day, an 0-5 loss to the Community College of Morris County.  The ladies only managed three hits with sophomore Taylor White getting two, and pitcher Megan Passwaiter getting another.  Passwaiter pitched well, giving up only one earned run in the error filled contest.
The Lakers hope to play ten more games before heading home at the end of the week.

Players of the Week

  2009-2010 Season Outlook
The spring 2010 edition of the Lady Lakers fast pitch softball team will take the field with a lineup of fifteen diverse players.

"This year’s team is a young team with only four returning players. Although we are a young team we have brought in athletes with a lot of talent and playing experience," states Judy Sargent, who is in her sixth season as head coach of the Lakers.

The returning personnel consist of Katie Basmagy, Tina Schneider and Taylor White.

Basmagy is a pitcher who throws a mix of pitches. Schneider plays outfield and serves as a backup catcher for the team. White is also an outfielder, but can double at second base when needed. As a group they and their teammates performed well this fall against some impressive competition including Penn State Behrend, Notre Dame College, Ursuline College, Lake Erie College and Mercyhurst Northeast Community College.

These athletes have provided leadership, enthusiasm and intensity and those attributes have become contagious for the freshman players.

"Although the incoming freshman contingency of Cruz, Drenski, Lopardo, Marshall, McBean, Molzon, Moore, Moorman, Passwaiter, Tecco and Wilson is new to college softball, these players come to our program with impressive high school and travel team backgrounds," states Sargent.

The Lakers boast a pitching staff of five, and the versatility of this will serve the program well.

The experienced coaching staff consists of Dana Cappelucci, Jeff Loga and Sargent. Dana Cappelucci returns for her third season with her strong contribution in the areas of conditioning and strength training. Her knowledge and experience in preparing athletes for a rigorous two month season has built an impressive squad that possesses endurance and strength.

"Our student athletes are in shape and ready for the physical demands of the game," states Cappelucci.

In addition to Cappelucci, Jeff Loga is back for his second season with the Lakers. His coaching strength is in pitching and catching. He has a solid ability to assess the opposing hitter and call pitches that limit the opponent's success in the box. He has worked diligently with the pitching staff since August to help each build a repertoire of pitches. Jeff works integrally with young local talent and has brought a strong recruitment base to the Lakeland program.

Competition in the conference will again be stiff. Owens Community College is the team to beat. They historically possess a strong program.

"Lakeland will have to give its best performance against Cuyahoga Community College, as well as Owens in the conference battles, said Sargent. “We are young but we are talented. We must work to our fullest potential against all competition."
