January 13-17, 2010

     Once again
Lakeland Community College had a student-athlete honored at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) convention.  This year’s event took place in Philadelphia and sophomore defender Aldo Maiorano was on hand to receive his award.
Maiorano was one of three Lakers honored by the NSCAA this year.  Maiorano anchored the Lakers defense this season and his efforts have earned him two honors from the NSCAA, as well as attention from four year schools.  He hopes to sign a National Letter of Intent next month.
Maiorano was named an NSCAA second team All-American.  He was also named to the NSCAA’s Division I Junior College All-North Region first team. He is a native of
Whitby, Ontario and played with the Winstars Soccer Academy
.
Teammates, sophomore midfielder Manuel Conde and freshman forward Dean Miller, were named to the NSCAA’s Division I Junior College All-North Region second team.  Conde is a native of
Caracas, Venezuela and Miller hails from Johannesburg, South Africa.

October 6, 2009
Congratulations to Dean Miller and Antons Trifonovs who were named Player of the Week and Goalie of the Week respectively, in the OCCAC for their outstanding play last week.
Miller scored the game winning goal against Cuyahoga Community College
with 13 minutes left to play.  The goal allowed the Lakers to avenge an earlier loss to the Challengers, and move into second place in the OCCAC.
Trifonovs turned away eleven of twelve shots in the same game, and offered the assist to Miller on the game winning goal.  The Lakers won the contest 2-1.
Freshman forward Dean Miller is a native of
Johannesburg, South Africa where he attended King David School.  He was awarded full colors in soccer and half-colors in hockey.  His club soccer activities have taken him to Israel
.  He is the third in a family of four brothers and also enjoys playing tennis and cricket.  He is studying business management.
Freshman goalie Antons Trifonovs is a native of
Riga, Latvia where he graduated from 44.Riga School
in 2002.  He has played in the Latvian amateur league and says that his experience is his strongest soccer skill.  He enjoys playing and watching beach volleyball.  His major is international business.

The soccer tournament at Cuyahoga Community College scheduled for October 3 and 4 was cancelled due to poor field conditions.  However, the Lakers game against the Malone JV team, scheduled for that tnament, will be made up at Lakeland, on Monday, October 5 at 4:30.

September 29, 2009

Congratulations to Aldo Maiorano for being named OCCAC Player of the Week on September 29, 2009.

Maiorano’s strong defensive play has been an asset to the Lakers all season.  In a recent game against
Owens Community College, Mairorano’s late game efforts “were instrumental in holding off a very strong Owens surge at the end of the game,” according to Lakeland
coach Djuro Peric.  The Lakers went on to win that game 2-1, which put them in a tie for second place in the OCCAC.
Maiorano is a second year player from
Whitby, Ontario who attended Father Leo J. Austin School.  While at home, he enjoyed volunteering at his former elementary school, helping out the sports teams.  He played for the Winstars Soccer Academy
and the Darlington U21 Impact Team.
Last season, he was named the Lakers’ Most Improved Player.  He was named to the OCCAC All Conference Second Team and the NSCAA All-Region team.  He is majoring in criminal justice/criminology.  He intends to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

September 30, 2009
The team moved into second place in the OCCAC with a 2-1 victory over
Cuyahoga Community College.  The victory avenged an early season 1-0 loss to the Challengers.
Miro Pezer scored the team’s first goal on a free kick.
Dean Miller scored the winning goal with thirteen minutes remaining in the game, off an assist from goalie Antons Trifonovs, who had eleven saves in the contest.
     The Lakers will host
Mercyhurst NE on Wednesday, October 7 at 4:00 and will travel to Michigan for two games that weekend.

September 23, 2009

The Lakers pulled out a victory in a mid-season “must-win” match against Owens Community College.
The Lakers were coming off a tough home loss to Cincinnati State Community and
Technical College.  The Surge is gaining attention in the national polls, and the Lakers battled them in a tough match, but fell by an 0-1 score.  Goalie Antons Trifonovs had 14 saves in the match.
However, it appears that two tough back-to-back non-victories (the Lakers previous match was a 3-3 tie at
Lorain County Community College) only served to motivate the Lakers.
The Lakers used a well-balanced offensive attack to take the road game against the always tough
Owens Community College.  The Lakers won 2-1.
Miro Pezer scored on an assist by Patrick Sheridan and Dean Miller scored another on an assist by Manuel Conde.  Goalie Antons Trifonovs had seven saves.
However, the game could not have been won without the strong defensive play of Aldo Maiorano.  The second year defender took it up another notch late in the game when the Express mounted a strong offensive attack.  Maiorano’s strong play prevented the Owens Express from taking a quality shot on goal before time expired.
A loss would have left the Lakers in the OCCAC cellar, with little hope of recovery.  Now the team is in a three-way tie for second place. However, it will take a group effort by all three teams to knock
Cincinnati State out of first place.
     The Lakers are now
5-3-1 overall and 1-2 in the OCCAC.  Their next game will be a road contest at Cuyahoga Community College on Wednesday, September 30, at 4:30.  The Lakers will be looking to avenge an earlier 0-1 loss at the hands of the Crusaders.

Players of the Week

  2009-2010 Season Outlook
The 2009–2010 Lakeland soccer team is determined to come back and prove that they are still the best college team in the area, and conference. With the return of seven players from last year, as well as the 2008 OCCAC coach of the year Djuro Peric, the Lakers have a solid foundation of veterans to lead the team and continue to play the style of soccer that Coach Peric has emphasized throughout his winning career.
The expectations for this year’s Lakers are as high as they have ever been, especially with new faces on the coaching front. After three years of assisting coach Peric, Ante Pilekic has moved on to his alma mater Lake Catholic High School, where he has assumed the head coaching position for the boys varsity soccer team.
But with the departure of Pilekic, Coach Peric has brought on two assistants who will continue to lead with enthusiasm and class. Nick Cindric, is the court administrator at Painesville Municipal Court and has spent many years coaching recreational and travel soccer teams. After spending two years at Lakeland, he continued his education at Youngstown State earning his BS in criminal justice. Coach Cindric resides with his wife and two college-age sons in Willowick.
Paul Antonelli is a 2002 graduate of Lakeland, and continued his education at Cleveland State University earning his BS in urban planning. Coach Antonelli now helps run a family business that sells lift and transfer systems for the developmentally disabled and resides in the University Circle area while working on his masters degree at CSU. Both Cindic and Antonelli have played for coach Peric at Lakeland and know the game of soccer. These coaching additions will bring helpful insight and leadership, to compliment Coach Peric’s winning tradition.
The Lakers’ defense returns three starters that will play key rolls in the success of the team this year. Aldo Moriano, a second year starter who was voted to the OCCAC all conference second team last year, will be the cornerstone of the defense. Pedro Ribiero and Miro Pezer both Mentor High standouts will help solidify and bring leadership to the back line. New freshmen defenders include Sebastian Rodriquez, a Venezuelan keeper/defender who will be asked to play a more defensive roll and back up our new starting freshman keeper, Latvian standout, Antons Trifonovs. Freshmen Ben Bernot and David Shook, both Riverside High School grads; Dan Martic (Mentor High) and Steven Collins (Eastlake North High School) will finalize the defense and bring new talent for the Lakers’ back field to build upon.
The midfield features four sophomores, including 2008 standouts Manuel Conde and Juan Aguinaga (Lakeside High School). Conde was voted to the OCCAC all conference first team last year, and both Conde and Aguinaga were both OCCAC academic award winners for the Lakers. These players not only bring leadership on the playing field but are perfect examples on how to be leaders in the classroom as well. Mario Duvnjak and Chris Dunlap (Geneva High School) are well seasoned players that will play multiple rolls to help solidify the midfield and are always a threat to put the ball in the back of the net. New additions to the Lakers’ midfield are Patrick Sheridan (Wickliffe High School) and Daniel Rosbottom, who will bring lightning fast speed and sound fundamentals to the midfield.
The biggest changes to the 2009 Lakers will take place up front. Freshman Dean Miller, a South African scoring sensation will lead the Lakers’ scoring attack with solid speed and ball striking ability. Other new additions to the front line include Robert Ammons, a Cardinal High scoring standout, and Nico Neumann a German striker with a rocket left foot. These freshmen will be extremely helpful to the Lakers and establish a strong foundation for the team, both this year and next.
  Recap: Men's Soccer 2008-2009

The 2008 Lakers Soccer Team was one of the most successful in school history.  The team’s overall success was not just limited to the team’s accomplishments on the soccer field (which were impressive); but spread to the classroom and into community.
The team had an overall record of
12-5-2 and went undefeated (6-0) in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.  The team advanced to the championship round of the Region XII Tournament, before losing to Schoolcraft 0-1, in a shoot-out.
Before beginning the lengthy list of soccer awards and honors bestowed on this group of athletes, we would like to highlight some of their other accomplishments.
