Lakeland’s golf team had the opportunity to play three rounds with the best golfers in the NJCAA Region XII.  The tournament took place at Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek, Michigan on May 11 and 12.
Sophomore Ryan Ausperk finished in the top ten after the first round, when he shot a 76.  However, he stumbled in the second round with an 82 before recovering slightly in the final round with a 79.  His 237 score placed him 20th among the 66 golfers who participated.
Sophomore Chris Chample and freshman Nick Morocco shot their best games in the second round, with an 83 and 79 respectively.
     Ausperk will be attending
John Carroll University in the fall, where he hopes to continue to improve his game as a member of Coach Mike Moran’s golf team.
The golf team will play off-season rounds in the fall.  Anyone interested in becoming a member of the golf team at
Lakeland Community College should leave a message for Coach Bobby Cala at 440-525-7826 or golf@lakelandcc.edu.

Players of the Week

  2009-2010 Season Outlook
Coach Bobby Cala is very excited about this season’s golf squad. The team is comprised of freshman talent: Captain Jesse Sopczak, Ron Ritner, Mike Baltus, Zack Underwood and Cory Luster.

All participated in the fall season where building team chemistry became as important as improving technique.

The team held it’s own in two local invitationals hosted by Lake Erie College and John Carroll University, where the majority of the participating schools were four year colleges.

“This is a very coachable group,” says Cala. “I expect us to be competitive in the conference and to make some noise once the regional tournament rolls around in May.”

“My boys must stay focused on playing the golf course, one shot at a time,” says Cala. “They can’t get distracted by what the competition is doing.”

Although Cala feels that his team must stay focused on each hole of each course, he also thinks that an important part of winning the OCCAC will be determining the strengths and weaknesses of the Owen’s squad. He expects that to happen during the course of the season when the Lakers will face all conference foes every week while playing on each squad’s home course.

The head coach says that former Laker and assistant coach Bob Brodnon will be a big asset to the team this season. “He will be a fresh set of eyes, and a different voice, as we work to improve each player’s game,” says Cala. “He can make a big difference.”

The Lakers kick off their season with what Cala calls “Boot Camp.” It is a golf marathon that will take place between March 11 and 20, when the Lakers will travel to South Carolina to play 36 holes a day for a week.

Back home, the team will play in at least two invitationals before starting their league schedule in mid-April.

The team practices and plays its OCCAC home match at Quail Hollow Country Club in Concord Township.
