It was 85 degrees and sunny, a perfect day for golf, but Cincinnati State dominated the field on their home course at the Wildwood Golf Course in Middleton, Ohio.  The Lakers finished in their usual spot in the field; however, Owens, Columbus and Lakeland’s scores were only seven strokes apart on the par 71 course.
In a rather unusual finish, Lakeland’s top four golfers all shot an 83 on the day.
The OCCAC tournament takes place on Monday, May 03, at the Belmont Country Club.

In back-to-back conference matches the team took twenty strokes off of its team score, unfortunately, the rest of the field posted similar improvement at the Northstar Golf Course in Columbus.  The Lakers again finished fourth out of five teams, ahead of Lorain but behind Owens, Columbus and Cincinnati who continue to jockey for position at the top of the league standings.
Jesse Sopczak continues to lead the team.  He shot a respectable 74 (two over par), but there was no first place finish today as Blake Harpenan from Cincinnati shot a 68 to pace the Surge.

The Lakers participated in their first tournament this weekend.  They were the only junior college in the field of the John Carroll University Spring Invitational Golf Tournament that was played at Fowler’s Mill in Chester Township.
First time jitters plagued the inexperienced Lakers, who finished last in the eight team field.  However, Zack Underwood did finish in the top 20.
The tournament, played on Friday, was the first of three days on the links for the team.  Coach Bobby Cala was pleased with the team’s improvement as the weekend progressed.
The team scrimmaged at Wildwood and Northstar Country Clubs on Saturday and Sunday.  These are the home courses for Cincinnati State Tech and CC and Columbus State CC respectively, and the team will play them again later this season in conference play.
This week the team will play Forest Hills Country Club in Lorain, in a non-conference match.

Individual scores from the John Carroll Tournament are listed below.  The team played a total of 27 holes.  The scores are the first nine holes, followed by their score on 18.
Zack Underwood  36 – 79
Ron Ritner  36 – 81
Jesse Sopczak  41 - 86
Mike Baltus  38 – 89
Nick Morocco  44 - 89

Spring 2010
The golf team made their annual trek to South Carolina over spring break.  Coach Cala schedules the team to play 36 holes a day.  The team stays, and plays at the Hickory Knob Resort that is located on the Georgia border.   However, they sometimes squeeze in a side trip to see the sites.  A highlight is always a visit to the legendary Augusta National Golf Club.

Although Augusta is a private club and the golf team cannot golf there, they do enjoy visiting one of golf's most renowned courses.  Here the team takes a look down the club's entrance drive, Magnolia Lane.

Players of the Week

  2009-2010 Season Outlook
Coach Bobby Cala is very excited about this season’s golf squad. The team is comprised of the sole returning player, Nick Morocco and freshman talent: Captain Jesse Sopczak, Ron Ritner, Mike Baltus and Zack Underwood.

All participated in the fall season where building team chemistry became as important as improving technique.

The team held it’s own in two local invitationals hosted by Lake Erie College and John Carroll University, where the majority of the participating schools were four year colleges.

“This is a very coachable group,” says Cala. “I expect us to be competitive in the conference and to make some noise once the regional tournament rolls around in May.”

“My boys must stay focused on playing the golf course, one shot at a time,” says Cala. “They can’t get distracted by what the competition is doing.”

Although Cala feels that his team must stay focused on each hole of each course, he also thinks that an important part of winning the OCCAC will be determining the strengths and weaknesses of the Owen’s squad. He expects that to happen during the course of the season when the Lakers will face all conference foes every week while playing on each squad’s home course.

The head coach says that former Laker and assistant coach Bob Brodnon will be a big asset to the team this season. “He will be a fresh set of eyes, and a different voice, as we work to improve each player’s game,” says Cala. “He can make a big difference.”

The Lakers kick off their season with what Cala calls “Boot Camp.” It is a golf marathon that will take place between March 11 and 20, when the Lakers will travel to South Carolina to play 36 holes a day for a week.

Back home, the team will play in at least two invitationals before starting their league schedule in mid-April.

The team practices and plays its OCCAC home match at Quail Hollow Country Club in Concord Township.

  Recap: Men's Golf 2008-2009
Three members of Lakeland’s golf team had the opportunity to play three rounds with the best golfers in the NJCAA Region XII.  The tournament took place at Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek, Michigan on May 11 and 12.
Sophomore Ryan Ausperk finished in the top ten after the first round, when he shot a 76.  However, he stumbled in the second round with an 82 before recovering slightly in the final round with a 79.  His 237 score placed him 20th among the 66 golfers who participated.
Sophomore Chris Chample and freshman Nick Morocco shot their best games in the second round, with an 83 and 79 respectively.
Morocco returns to the Lakers in 2010.  He came on strong as last season progressed and Coach Cala is hoping that the improvement continues into this season.
Ausperk is attending John Carroll University, where he hopes to continue to improve his game as a member of Coach Mike Moran’s golf team.  At the conclusion of the 2009 season, he was named to the OCCAC second team.
