Battle Creek, Michigan (Bedford Valley Golf Club) -- Lakeland golfers, Ron Ritner and Stephen Slocum participated in the Region XII Tournament this past week at Bedford Valley Golf Club. This course is a par 72 and stretches 6,602 yards. On Sunday there was a full practice round where the coaches were able to enjoy playing with their kids. The Tournament began with 36 holes on Monday. It was a little cold for the 9:00 shotgun start but it turned out to be a pleasant day for the golfers. Ritner had scores of 89 and 83 totaling 172 at the end of the first day. Slocum scored 82 and 77 to give him 159 Monday night. The final 18 holes were played on Tuesday, Ritner shot 80 to give him a score of 252 for the tournament and Slocum shot 85 for a tournament score of 244.
Ron is being looked at by a few colleges throughout the state of Ohio. He hopes to play golf and continue his education at one of these schools.
Stephen is happy with his first year of collegiate golf at Lakeland and is looking forward to his second year.
Lakeland Will Send Two Golfers to Regionals
Lakeland participated in the 36-hole Conference Tournament last weekend. The tournament was held at Belmont Country Club, one of the premier golf courses in Toledo, Ohio. It was a cold and rainy tournament like so many of the tournaments this year for the Lakers. Stephen Slocum and Ronnie Ritner shot well enough to advance them to the Regional Tournament at Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek, Michigan. Stephen shot 79 on Sunday and 80 on Monday while Ronnie shot 89 on Sunday and 79 on Monday. Zack Underwood had a great season and really came out strong the second half. He shot 83 on Sunday and 86 on Monday, missing the Regional trip by 1 stroke. Congratulations to Zack and Scott on their season and good luck to Ronnie and Stephen this week at Regionals!
April 25, 2011 -- Lakeland hosted their Invitational at Blackbrook Golf Course this past week. On Thursday our guys played a scramble with the guys from Cincinnati CC, Columbus CC and Owens CC. This was a fun day for everyone and gave the teams a look at the course before going out for conference play on Friday. Highlight of the day was freshman Stephen Slocum for Lakeland. Slocum shot 70, tying Dan Martina from Columbus CC for the lowest score. Slocum and Martina played two playoff holes before Martina shot one lower than Slocum to become the medalist of the Invitational. Zack Underwood also had an impressive day for Lakeland shooting a personal low of 75. The Lakers are really looking good as they get ready to head to Cincinnati for the final Invitational of the season. Slocum was also named Player of the Week for his outstanding performance at Blackbrook. Congratulations to Stephen and the rest of the Lakers on their performance this past week.
April 4, 2011 -- The golf team took a trip down to southern Ohio this past weekend. On Saturday, April 2nd they scrimmaged Cincinnati State. The weather in Cincinnati was cooler than it was in Cleveland making it difficult to play in. Sunday they were in Sunbury, Ohio playing at NorthStar Country Club. It was still a cool day but the sun was out which warmed things up a bit. Coach Cala says the scores are starting to come down but they still have work to do before conference play begins. The team’s first conference match is on Monday, April 11th at Belmont Country Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Spring Trip 2011
The golf team made their annual trip down to South Carolina over spring break. The team left the blizzard in Kirtland, Ohio on Friday, March, 11 and spent a week in the sun at the Hickory Knob Resort, located on the Georgia border. After being cooped up in the Lakeland gym for 5 months the team has cabin fever and was anxious to get out on the course. The team plays 36 holes each day they are in South Carolina, taking one day off to rest their hands and take their annual trip to Augusta. Augusta, Georgia is the home of the Masters and the guys enjoy seeing Magnolia Lane and the perfect grounds of the course. Coach Cala says “With a smaller team than they had in the fall the boys have to think about every tournament. If they want to reach Nationals they can’t afford even one bad outing”. They are coming along but he is still working on them “feeling their fault and feeling their fix”.
Fall 2010 and Forecast for Spring 2011
This past fall the Lakeland Golf team played in several tournaments during their unofficial season. Most of these tournaments were against 4-year schools and the guys held their own. Coach Cala says “the guys need to get better as a team and in order to do this they need to learn they are not playing against the other golfers but instead they are playing against the course.” Coach Cala is excited about the role his assistant Bob Brodnon has been taking. Brodnon has been Coach Cala’s assistant for 4 years and he has grown and developed further as a coach each year. He has really become an asset to the coaching staff and a mentor for the boys. Coach Cala’s main goal for the team this season is to make the boys feel the fault in their swing and to recognize how to fix it. He says once they have this it’s all practice from there.
Coach Cala is expecting great things from sophomore captain Ron Ritner. Ron had a great fall medaling in a few tournaments and dropping his average to 75 from 82 last spring. Coach Cala says “Ron has found his groove” he expects him to make a move in the conference, advancing to regionals and possibly nationals.
The other returning sophomore, Zach Underwood is looking very promising. Coach Cala saw a big improvement in Zach this past fall.
Freshman golfer from Eastlake North High School, Stephen Slocum has been a great addition to the team so far. Prior to Lakeland, Stephen won a Southwest Junior Tour event. Stephen is excited to be competitive in college competition. Coach Cala sees a lot of potential in this young golfer.
A new addition to the golf team this spring is Scott Ingersoll. Scott is the only two-sport athlete on the team, playing soccer in the fall. Coach Cala is looking to Scott for his experience to take a leadership role. Scott earned his Bachelor’s degree from Kent State before coming back to Lakeland to pursue a degree in Nursing. Scott earned a 4.0 GPA this past fall while playing soccer and working at Lost Nation Sports Park in Willoughby.
Also joining the team is freshman Jordan Hanzel from Notre Dame Cathedral Latin. Coach Cala is very impressed with the mechanics of his swing. He is excited to see what he can do out on the course.
Once again the Lakers will begin practicing inside for 6 weeks before they head south for spring training. The guys go to Hickory Knob Resort near Augusta each year, the home of the Masters.
Once they return home the Lakers will be at a new home course, Black Brook Country Club. This city owned course in Mentor is where you can find Coach Cala and the Lakers golf team practicing every week.
October 17, 2010 -- It was 65 degrees and sunny at Barrington Country Club, a great day for golf. The Lakers and 4 other schools participated in the Lourdes College Fall Invitational. Lakeland golfer Ron Ritner was the medalist in this invitational, shooting a 78 to lead the field.

Jesse Sopczak continues to lead the team. He shot a respectable 74 (two over par), but there was no first place finish today as Blake Harpenan from Cincinnati shot a 68 to pace the Surge.

April 2, 2010 -- The Lakers participated in their first tournament this weekend. They were the only junior college in the field of the John Carroll University Spring Invitational Golf Tournament that was played at Fowler’s Mill in Chester Township.
First time jitters plagued the inexperienced Lakers, who finished last in the eight team field. However, Zack Underwood did finish in the top 20.
The tournament, played on Friday, was the first of three days on the links for the team. Coach Bobby Cala was pleased with the team’s improvement as the weekend progressed.
The team scrimmaged at Wildwood and Northstar Country Clubs on Saturday and Sunday. These are the home courses for Cincinnati State Tech and CC and Columbus State CC respectively, and the team will play them again later this season in conference play.
This week the team will play Forest Hills Country Club in Lorain, in a non-conference match.

Spring 2010 The golf team made their annual trek to South Carolina over spring break. Coach Cala schedules the team to play 36 holes a day. The team stays, and plays at the Hickory Knob Resort that is located on the Georgia border. However, they sometimes squeeze in a side trip to see the sites. A highlight is always a visit to the legendary Augusta National Golf Club.

Although Augusta is a private club and the golf team cannot golf there, they do enjoy visiting one of golf's most renowned courses. Here the team takes a look down the club's entrance drive, Magnolia Lane.
