Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Basketball Post Season Honors March 2010 Tevin Calhoun and Brendan Cooper were named Co-Newcomers of the Year for the conference. Calhoun averaged 10.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.5 blocks during the conference season. He shot 41.0 percent from the floor. Cooper averaged 14.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per conference game. He also added 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 53.7 percent from the floor for the Lakers during conference games. Nate Barnes was the best free throw shooter in the country for the second year in a row. His 92 percent conversion rate from the charity stripe led the conference. He was third in the OCCAC in scoring at 19.9 points per game, converting 40.8 percent of his shots in conference play. He was named to the OCCAC first team. Cooper and Calhoun were second team honorees, along with Darrell Lampley who was sixth in the conference in scoring at 15.9 points per contest. Lampley led the conference in assists at 6.8 per game and was fourth in steals at 2.7 per game. Lakeland’s men’s coach Terry Bowe has been voted OCCAC Coach of the Year for the 2009-10 season. Bowe led the Lakers to a 9-5 conference record and a 19-11 overall record. The Lakers finished tied for second in the OCCAC this year. This was the third time that Bowe won this honor in his six year tenure as head coach.
February 17, 2010 The Lakers fell behind early, and couldn’t outplay the Express down the stretch, and fell to Owens Community College by an 86-94 score. The Lakers played the Express an even 49-49 in the second half, but could not overcome the eight point hole they had put themselves in during the first stanza. During the Lakers first meeting with Owens, they were victorious primarily because they managed to hold the Express’ leading scorer, Jonathan Dunn to only eight points; however, tonight Dunn put 30 on the Lakers. Statistically, the teams were fairly even. The Express had more steals (7-6), but also had more turnovers (18-17). The slight advantage in rebounding (31-30), 3-point shooting (36.8%-33.3%), and free throws (79.5%-77.8%) certainly weren’t enough to clinch a victory for the Express. However, the first half advantage in field goal percentage (56% to 38.5%), extra trips to the foul line (44-36), and the overall performance of Dunn (10 for 17 from the floor and a perfect eight for eight from the line) were just too much for the Lakers to overcome. The Lakers’ Darrell Lampley led all scorers with 35 points, while Nate Barnes chipped in 16 and Klein Harper had 15. The loss puts the Lakers (19-6, 8-3) in a tie with Cincinnati for the conference lead. The Lakers won’t have to wait too long to attempt to reclaim sole possession of first place, as they play the Surge this weekend.
January 27, 2010 The Lakers held on to their first place berth in the OCCAC with a decisive 95-64 win over Owens Community College tonight. The Lakers controlled the boards, had five players score in double figures and shot 56% from the floor. They also held the nation’s second leading scorer, Jonathan Dunn (24.95 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 2.5 apg) to only eight points, two rebounds and no assists. The Lakers had a 57-43 advantage on the boards, and were led by the trio of Brendan Cooper (9), Ed Hashier (8) and Klein Harper (7). Nate Barnes led all scorers with 23 points, and Cooper threw in 17. Eleven point contributions were made by Darrell Lampley, Keith Curry and Harper. Curry was the most efficient scorer on the night, making four of his five shots from the floor and three of his four from the charity stripe. The Express got 12 points and 13 rebounds from DaLante Heard and ten points from Earl Hardison. As a team, they shot 36.6% from the floor, 16.7% from beyond the arc and only made half of their free throws. The Lakers will travel to Columbus on Saturday to face the Cougars who are currently ranked tenth in the country in the most recent national poll. Columbus fell seven spots in the poll after dropping recent league contests against Cincinnati State T&CC and Cuyahoga CC. The Lakers also dropped their game against Cuyahoga, but beat Cinci 81-80.
Tuesday, January 26 – From the OCCAC website Men's Basketball Lakeland's Calhoun named OCCAC men's basketball Player of the Week Lakeland Community College freshman guard Tevin Calhoun has named OCCAC men's basketball player of the week. Calhoun scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in two games last week. He also had one assist, two steals and three blocks on the week. Tevin shot 58.6 percent (17-29) from the field, 57.1 percent (4/7) from the arc and 77.7 percent (7/9) from the charity stripe. Calhoun hit two three throws with virtually no time left on the clock on Saturday to beat Cincinnati State T&CC. "Tevin is an energetic player on both ends of the floor, who brings the ability to shoot, defend and slash," said Head Coach Terry Bowe. The OCCAC congratulates Tevin on the award.
January 23, 2010 The Lakers (14-7, 4-1) find themselves alone in first place atop the OCCAC, despite dropping a close one earlier this week to cross town rival Cuyahoga Community College 68-72. Today the Lakers pulled out their second one-point victory in as many weeks when they beat Cincinnati State Tech and CC 81-80 on Tevin Calhoun’s two free throws as time expired. Cincinnati arrived in Kirtland hot off a big victory over Columbus State. On Wednesday the Surge had beaten Columbus 72-68, a day after the national poll had named the Cougars the third best team in the nation. (However, after Wednesday’s loss to Cincinnati, Columbus went on to drop today’s contest against Cuyahoga Community College 63-59.) So the Lakers had their work cut out for them under the best of circumstances, but two of their guards were playing with ankle sprains and one of the team’s best defenders, swing man Louis Hinson, went down with a knee injury early in the first half. The game was a see-saw battle, with neither team taking more than a six point lead throughout. With less than a minute left, the Surge was holding on to a four point lead. Nate Barnes made a three point shot to bring the Lakers within one. The Surge missed a free throw and the Lakers got the ball back with 24 second remaining. With one second left Klein Harper’s shot bounced off the iron, but Calhoun was fouled as he attempted to tip in the rebound. Calhoun made both his free throws with 0.1 left on the clock to clinch the victory. Calhoun led all scorers with 24; while OCCAC Player of the Week Darrell Lampley scored 16 points and had four steals. Other Lakers scoring in double figures included Barnes with 15 and Brendan Cooper with 10. The Lakers host Owens CC on Wednesday, January 27 at 7:30.
From the OCCAC website Wednesday, January 20 Men's Basketball Lakeland's Lampley named OCCAC men's basketball player of the week Lakeland Community College sophomore guard Darrell Lampley has been named the OCCAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Lampley scored 45 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out 20 assists. He also had four steals and shot 58.6 percent (17-29) from the floor. Darrell shot 57.1 percent (4-7) from the arc and 77.8 percent (7-9) from the charity stripe. "Darrell consistently helps his teammates become better players and makes good decisions on and off the court. Darrell is a 3.1 student and works hard both on the off the court", said Head Coach Terry Bowe. The OCCAC congratulates Darrell on the award.
January 16, 2010 The Lakers advanced to 3-0 in conference play and 13-6 overall by defeating the Edison State Chargers 94-93 in a wild finish in Piqua, Ohio. Lakeland jumped out to a 19 point lead in the early going and still led by 11 at the half. The Lakers used a combination of defensive pressure and transition scoring to take the early lead. Edison came charging out of the break with their top player, Keith Lowe (22.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 6.4 assists per game), leading the attack. Lowe was the game’s leading scorer with 38. The Chargers transformed their 11 point half-time deficit to a ten point lead with less than two minutes remaining in the contest. Then the Lakers turned it up a notch at both ends of the floor. A couple of steals allowed Nate Barnes and Tevin Calhoun to convert a couple of threes to cut the Chargers’ lead to four. Additional defensive pressure allowed Klein Harper to convert back to back lay-ups to tie the score with five second remaining. Keith Curry stole Edison’s subsequent inbound pass and launched the ball up court to Barnes, who was fouled as the buzzer went off. The Lakers were more than happy to send last season’s NJCAA free-throw shooting champion to the line with two chances to convert one. But while everyone figured that the sharp shooting Barnes certainly had had his fill of drama for the week, after scoring his 1,000th collegiate point on Wednesday in the waning seconds against Lorain; Barnes just had to do the unexpected. He missed his first attempt, but a subsequent time-out brought Barnes back to reality. He nailed his second shot to seal the victory. While the final two minutes was a team effort, the overall play of guard Darrell Lampley cannot be ignored. Lampley scored 30 points, dealt 11 assists, had three steals and was six for seven from the charity stripe. The Lakers travel across town on Wednesday to take on Cuyahoga County Community College and will host Cincinnati State Technical and Community College on Saturday at 3:00. The Lakers are currently tied with Columbus State Community College for first place in the OCCAC. Columbus is currently ranked fifth in the national poll.
January 13, 2009 Sophomore guard Nate Barnes hit his 1,000th career point in the final ten seconds of tonight’s game against Lorain County Community College. Barnes, who was the NJCAA free throw champion last season with a 91.43 shooting percentage, almost hit the milestone from the charity stripe. Barnes was playing his usual solid game until one of the referees said something about Barnes needing “three”. Barnes thought that he was about to break the three point shots in a game record (a record that he currently holds, with eight). With the game clearly in control of the Lakers, Barnes went for it….and lost his shooting touch. Eventually, he was fouled on a shot from beyond the arc, but only made two of the three free throws. Still operating on the assumption that he was going for a three point shot record, rather than only needing a single point to break 1,000, Barnes continued to shoot from the outside. Barnes sheepishly admitted that his late game shooting performance was a bit embarrassing, and said that had he known he just needed one more point to hit 1,000, “I just would have driven to the basket.” Finally, with 9.3 seconds remaining, Barnes made his seventh three-point shot of the game to finish the night with 25 and 1,002 career points. The Lakers won the game 96-62 and are currently 12-6 and 2-0 in the OCCAC.
January 9, 2010 The Lakers opened up conference play on a high note, beating 12th ranked Sinclair Community College 71-69. Freshman post player Brendan Cooper scored the game winner from just inside the three point arc, with only 2.9 seconds left on the clock. It was his only basket of the game. “That was not ‘Option A’ on the play,” admitted Coach Terry Bowe, with a smile. “We were trying to run a high screen and roll for Nate (Lakers’ leading scorer, sophomore Nate Barnes 20.1 ppg), but they didn’t fall for the screen.” Bowe was quick to credit Cooper for the improvisation. “You have to give Brendan credit. He knew time was running out, and he wasn’t afraid to take the shot.” At six foot six, Cooper’s primary responsibilities lie in the paint; however, he has knocked down at least five other long range shots this season. The Tartan Pride answered with a three point shot as time expired, but the ball rimmed in and out. The Lakers put forth a solid defensive effort in this contest. Sinclair entered the game with four players averaging in double figures, but only one (De’Angelo Gates 12.4 ppg) hit his average. The Lakers held Sinclair’s leading scorer and second leading rebounder (Jason Clardy 15 ppg, 6.6 rpg) to only two points and four boards. Nate Barnes led all scorers with 21 points and Klein Harper led the Lakers with 10 rebounds. Harper and Tevin Calhoun each scored 12 points and Darrell Lampley tossed in ten. The Lakers won the battle of the boards 48-41. The Lakers are now 11-6 overall and 1-0 in OCCAC play.
December 12 and 13, 2009 The Lakers have posted five straight victories and had an impressive weekend in New York State. On Saturday, the Lakers (9-5) beat the previously undefeated Kats of Erie Community College 86-78. The 8-0 Kats were ranked fifth in the NJCAA’s latest poll. The Kats had beaten the Lakers 108-105 earlier this season, but Coach Bowe opted to emphasize defense in this game and it paid off for the Lakers. Erie CC has five players who average double digit scoring, but only three broke the ten point mark in this contest. None exceeded their average by more than a point. It wasn’t all defense in this game, as the Kats attacked the Lakers’ Achilles Heal late in the contest, to no avail. The Lakers led by as many as eleven late in the second half, but the Kats mounted a furious rally. Part of that rally entailed sending the Lakers to the foul line. With the exception of the NJCAA’s 2009 free throw champion Nate Barnes, the team does not perform especially well (63%) at the foul line. However, on this afternoon the Lakers nailed 86% (18 of 21) of their second half free throws to secure the victory. Barnes led all scorers with twenty-one points, including seven from the line and two from beyond the arc. Darrell Lampley had fifteen points and Davon Eley grabbed eleven rebounds. The Lakers pushed up the defense even more in Sunday’s contest against Alfred State, taking that game 60-48. The Lakers allowed only 21 first half points and held the Pioneers to a 28% shooting percentage on the afternoon. Barnes and Lampley again led the scoring with 15 and 13 points respectively. Klein Harper led all rebounders with eleven. The Lakers return to New York State on Saturday to face Genesse Community College. The Lakers will be looking to avenge a two point home loss suffered at the hands of the Cougars in November.
December 6, 2009 The Lakers move to 7-5 on the season after winning the TJ Memorial Tournament at Lakeland Community College this weekend. The Lakers beat Community College of Beaver County 97-68 on the opening night of the tournament. The Lakers had a hot shooting night, shooting 60% from the floor and 32% from beyond the arc; which more than made up for the Titans 41-38 edge on the boards. The Lakers had four players in double figures on the night. Darrell Lampley led all scorers with nineteen, while Brendan Cooper and Nate Barnes each had sixteen and Louis Hinson had ten. Cooper and Klein Harper each had six rebounds. In the championship game, the Lakers took on the previously unbeaten Vikings of Glen Oaks Community College. The high scoring contest was won by the Lakers 104-94. It was the fourth time this season that the Lakers have topped the 100 point mark. The Lakers had another solid night shooting the ball. They shot 54% from the floor, 40% from three-point range, and a solid 74% from the foul line. Five players scored in double figures. Barnes led all scorers with thirty three points. Other leading scorers were: Cooper with eighteen, Lampley with fourteen, Tevin Calhoun had thirteen, and Hinson had eleven. Hinson and Barnes had seven rebounds each. JaVaughn Acree-Manuel led the Vikings with twenty-six points and seven rebounds. Nate Barnes was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament with a two day stat line of forty-nine points, ten rebounds, five assists and four steals. Brendan Cooper and Darrell Lampley were also named to the All-Tournament team, with thirty-four and thirty-three points respectively. Next weekend the Lakers travel to New York to take on Erie Community College and Alfred State College. The Lakers dropped a wild and crazy 111-108 game to Erie earlier this season, and will be looking to avenge that loss.
November 23, 2009
The Lakers dropped a pair of games in the highly competitive Pete Pavia Memorial Scholarship Basketball Tournament at Monroe Community College this past weekend. Although the team stands at 4-5, it is hoped that this tough independent schedule will prepare the Lakers for the challenging OCCAC season ahead. Lakeland faced Monroe College – Bronx, NY, a Division I school who was ranked 20th in the NJCAA pre-season poll, in the opener of the tournament. The Lakers were down by seven at the half, but started the second stanza on a 10-0 run. With 15 minutes remaining, the Lakers were up by four. The game see-sawed back and forth, until Monroe pulled ahead by six with about three minutes left. The Lakers got a huge boost when the team’s 5’8” point guard, Darrell Lampley took a charge from Monroe’s seven foot, 260 pound center as he drove the middle of the lane and finished with a dunk. Unfortunately, the Lakers failed to convert two free throws on the ensuing possession, and the momentum was lost. Problems at the charity stripe plagued the Lakers, as they converted only 50% of their attempts. Meanwhile Monroe pulled away down the stretch by converting theirs, and shooting 80% for the game from the line. The Lakers were led by freshman Brendan Cooper, 14 points; Tevin Calhoun, 11 points; and Eddy Hashier, 10 points. Sophomore Louis Hinson also chipped in 10. In the second contest, the Lakers faced Hagerstown Community College who had lost their first game of the season the previous evening against Monroe CC – Rochester. Unfortunately, the Hagerstown squad rebounded from their loss better than the Lakers did. While the Lakers took a one point lead into the break, they again failed to execute at the line down the stretch; and shot only 40% from the charity stripe in this game. Nate Barnes scored 21 points in this game. Louis Hinson scored 19 points and was named to the All-Tournament team.
November 18, 2009
The Lakers had one of their best shooting nights ever, scored 108 points, but fell to the undefeated Erie Community College Kats 111-108. It was the second one-basket loss in less than a week for the Lakers, who had five players score in double figures. The Lakers shot an impressive 59% from the floor, 82% from the line and 43% from beyond the arc. Numbers like that would have been sufficient to knock off most opponents. However, the undefeated Kats shot 67% from the floor, 72% from the line and 64% from beyond the arc. The Lakers did win the battle of the boards, but with the shooting clinic that both teams put on, there weren’t a whole lot of rebounds to be had. Tevin Calhoun led the Lakers with 24 points, while Nate Barnes and Darrell Lampley each tossed in 20. Klein Harper and Brendan Cooper led all rebounders with eight and seven rebounds respectively. Cooper had 18 points and Harper had 14. The Lakers travel to New York this weekend where they will play Monroe Community College in the opening game of Monroe’s tournament.
November 15, 2009 The Lakers took to the road and beat undefeated Beaver County Community College 92-86, in their second game in as many days. The Lakers recovered nicely after a tough home loss, in the final seconds the previous day, against another undefeated opponent, Genesse Community College. Lakeland trailed by three at the half, but their pressure defense forced Beaver to turn over the ball and the Lakers converted their transition baskets. A three point shot by Nate Barnes was followed by a monstrous dunk by Tevin Calhoun to propel the Lakers to a strong finish. The Lakers improved to 4-2 on the year. Calhoun led the Lakers with 28 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Next up for the Lakers is yet another undefeated team. Erie Community College is 5-0 and coming off a weekend victory (86-80) over Mohawk Valley. The Lakers will tip-off on Wednesday, November 18th at 7:30 following the game between the Lady Lakers and Erie Community College, which starts at 5:30. Admission is always free at Lakeland’s home contests.
November 14, 2009 The Lakeland men’s team lost on a lay-up by Genesse Community College’s leading scorer Quintin Redfern, with four seconds left in this game. The Cougars were nearly perfect from the free throw line in the final six minutes, converting on nine of their ten trips to the line. Redfern scored seven of those nine, plus that last shot to keep the Cougars undefeated at 4-0 and dropping the Lakers to 4-2. Lakeland’s starting five worked as a well oiled machine through the first five minutes of the game. Their full court press forced multiple Cougar turnovers, which allowed the Lakers to jump out to an 18-8 lead. Sophomore center Klein Harper took control of the paint early, with post up buckets and put backs, to score ten points in the first seven minutes. The Lakers were also strong from the outside with sophomore Nate Barnes sinking two and freshman Tevin Calhoun dropping another from beyond the arc in the early going. The Lakers looked solid as they led 30-14 at the ten minute mark. Everything seemed to be going the Lakers’ way when freshman Brendan Cooper blocked a Genesse shot against the backboard and the crowd could almost hear Austin Carr yelling “Get that weak stuff out of here!” Unfortunately, that was the last of the Lakers’ highlights as the Cougars went on a 19-6 run in the last ten minutes of the half, to pull within three; and the Lakers went to the locker room clinging to a 36-33 lead. It didn’t take long for Genesse to pick up where they left off, and by the sixteen minute mark of the second half the teams were tied at 44. The next twelve minutes were a sloppy affair with neither team able to get into a rhythm. While the Cougars packed the paint, the Lakers worked hard for every bucket; scoring on drives to the basket and midrange jumpers. Meanwhile, Genesee made 28 trips to the line in the second half, while the Lakers were there only 13. With six minutes left and the score tied at 64, Redfern took over for the Cougars. His drives to the basket continuously placed him at the charity stripe and he converted seven of those attempts. With eleven seconds left and the home team down a basket, Lakers’ point guard Darrell Lampley drove to the hole and was fouled. He converted his first free throw, but was replaced at the line by Nate Barnes when the referees noticed that Lampley was bleeding. The Barnes’ bucket tied the game at 76. Unfortunately, Lakeland could not stop Redfern’s drive to the hoop on the ensuing possession, and he scored the lay-up. A long pass by the Lakers on the subsequent inbound play went out of bounds and the Cougars were able to inbound their possession successfully, and hold on for the win. Barnes led all scorers with 26 points. Lampley had 19, while Harper and Calhoun each had 12 for the Lakers. Redfern led the Cougars with 21 points.
