March 17, 2010 There was no luck of the Irish for the Lakers today. The team dropped their double header to Brunswick Community College by scores of 9-6 and 6-2. The Lakers managed only six and five hits respectively. Ryan Queener led the limited offense with three hits, including a double, and three runs scored. The team has five more games scheduled in South Carolina before heading home. March 15, 2010 The Lakers scored 16 runs on 12 hits in a victory over Montgomery Community College. Nine Lakers collected at least one hit, five players managed eight walks and three opportunists stole five bases in the route. David Goodgame and Clay Mayor each had four RBI and a home run, while going two for two at the plate. Andrew Quiles and Mykel Rosario each went two for two in stolen base attempts. Pitcher Steve Avanitis gave up three earned runs, in four innings for the win. In the night cap, the Lakers fell to Lackawanna 11-7. Carlos Guzman and Chase Westphal each collected two hits, and Rosario had four RBI; but the Lakers could not completely capitalize on the eight hits and seven walks that they collected. Pitcher Josh Vandemark struck out six, and gave up five earned runs in five innings, to take the loss.
March 14, 2010 The Lakers are opening their season in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. They are 2-0 after their opening day of play. Yesterday, in a 6-5 victory over Monroe Community College, Nate Hamill gave up five earned runs on five hits in five innings and Mike Mock gave up no runs in two innings of relief. They struck out four and two batters respectively. On the offensive side, second baseman Mikel Rosario went two for three with a double and shortstop Andrew Quiles stole two bases, had a hit and a sacrifice fly. The Lakers had fifteen hits, three home runs and five stolen bases in a 10-2 win over Northampton Community College. Third baseman Chase Westphal went three for three and had two stolen bases; outfielder Ryan Queener was three for four with three RBI and a stolen base; and outfielder Brayan Cacique was three for four with two home runs and four RBI. Corey Wax pitched six innings, giving up one earned run on seven hits, while Ryan Sanders pitched one inning of relief, giving up one earned run. The Lakers hope to play ten more games before heading home at the end of the week.
S.T.A.R. Student Athletes: Fall 2009 Congratulations to Dominique Davis, Nate Hamill, Michael Heus, Andrew Quiles and Mikel Rosario who each achieved a 3.0 grade point average or above, during the fall semester, while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours.
OCCAC Honors - 2009 Congratulations to Brian Laznik and Brayan Cacique for being named to the All-OCCAC team. Congratulations to Ben Detrow, William Couchenour and Kyle Arroyo for being honored as 2009 OCCAC Academic Award Winners.
FORMER LAKERS THAT ARE CURRENTLY PLAYING PROFESSIONALLY
Brad Coon (LCC 2002-03) was drafted in 2005 out of Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee by the Los Angeles Angels. This left handed center fielder is currently playing Class AAA ball for the Salt Lake Bees in the Pacific Coast League. In 2007, he was a CAL Mid-Season All-Star and in 2008 batted .306 with 73 runs scored in 85 games. In 2009 he appeared in 119 games and had only one error. At the plate he hit .276 with a .369 on-base percentage and .351 slugging percentage. He had 122 hits, garnering 155 total bases and he stole 23 more. In 2010 Coon requested his release from the Angels organization and has since signed with the Washington Nationals. He is playing in the Eastern League with their AA affiliate, the Harrisburg Senators.
Steve Junker (LCC 2007-08) was drafted in 2009 by the Colorado Rockies out of Bellevue College. This left hander pitches for the Casper Ghosts in the in Rookie Pioneer League. In 2009 he pitched 17 innings in 14 games, striking out 14.
Ryan Dennick (LCC 2007) was drafted in 2009 by the Kansas City Royals out of Tennessee Technical College. This left handed pitcher appeared in three games that season for the Idaho Falls Chukars. He pitched 7.1 innings with six strike-outs and an ERA of 3.68.
