Columbus State is ranked No. 1 in the nation and was a serious challenge for the young Lakers.  Again, it took awhile for the team to gain their bearings on the road; but they played a solid game three, challenging the Cougars until finally dropping the third set 26-28.  For the match, Elaine Bowen had 21 attack attempts, with seven kills and only one attack error.  Cidalene Henry and Ericka Stockard each had five kills.  Amanda Rhodes had seven blocks.  Karisca Chambers logged 21 assists and Karla Bailey did a great job on defense, getting a hand on every ball while in the back row.

September 16, 2009
The Lady Lakers opened conference play with a road victory over
Lorain County Community College.
The Lakers started the first game of the set strong, but could not put the Commodores away, dropping the first game 23-25.  The team quickly put that game behind them and came on strong in game two.
Setter Karisca Chambers (who had 47 assists in the match) had two hot hitters in that second set.  Cidalene Henry and Elaine Bowen each had five kills, and the team took that set by a 25-18 score.
The team went on to win games three and four by identical 25-21 scores.
Bowen had 17 kills on the night, while Henry and Ericka Stockard each had eight.
The Lakers were led defensively at the net by Henry with eight blocks, while Amanda Rhodes had five blocks and Bowen and Angela Gagliano each contributed four.
The back row defense was anchored by Libero Leona Oani who had 17 digs.  Karla Bailey and Stockard had 14 and 10 digs respectively.
The Lakers are excited about their first conference win and look forward to their home opener this weekend when they will host the nine-team Shannon Lee McBride Memorial Tournament.
Assistant Coach Rachel Pacholke said “I’m ready for a home match.  We have been on the road for awhile and being at home could really help us out.  I hope to see the community get out and watch the girls play. They have been working really hard.”
     Pool play begins at
4 p.m. on Friday.  The Tournament will feature nine matches on Friday night and again on Saturday morning, with games running on three courts.  A single elimination tournament, with seeds established on the pool play, will begin at about 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The Lakers will play on Court 1 in the Main Gym.  They will play the Notre Dame College JV team at
4 p.m. on Friday and the team from Lake Michigan College at 7 p.m.  On Saturday morning they will play Niagara Community College at 9 a.m. and Vincennes University at 11:30 a.m.  They will then play in the tournament starting at 1:30.

September 8, 2009

The Lakers notched their first non-tournament victory of the season when they traveled to
Mercyhurst NE, and took three straight from the Saints.
Angela Gagliano led the Lakers with consistent straight-to-the-floor spikes that allowed her to notch 12 kills in her 14 attacks.  Elaine Bowen added seven kills and 15 assists; while Karisca Chambers had 16 assists.
Defensively, Amanda Rhodes played a strong front row, contributing seven blocks; while Gagliano contributed five blocks.
The scores from these three games were 25-22, 25-22 and 25-18.
The Lakers opened this season at a Labor Day weekend tournament at Owens Community College, where the young Lakers went 1-6 defeating Mott Community College.
The team is now 2-6 and will travel to
Benton Harbor, Michigan to compete in the Lake Michigan Tournament on September 11 and 12.

June 2009
Jessica VanHorn has been named Interim Head Volleyball Coach by Lakeland Community College athletic director Scott Barlow.
Former Head Coach Amanda Peel recently resigned because she took a full time position out of state.  VanHorn has been associated with the program since 2005; two years as a player and two years as assistant coach.
“I had a wonderful student-athlete experience at Lakeland,” says VanHorn.  “I hope to create a positive, competitive environment for my players so that they too can walk away with great memories like I have.”
VanHorn is a Spring 2009 graduate of John Carroll University where she was a communications major.  In Spring 2007, she earned her Associate of Arts degree at Lakeland Community College.
Her high school volleyball was played at Willoughby South High School where she was a middle hitter while playing three years of varsity ball.  At Lakeland, she was switched to outside hitter and served the team as captain both years.
“I am happy to have the opportunity to lead the Lakeland program,” said Van Horn.  “I think that we have the potential to become a good team.”
Van Horn has already recruited a few players to supplement a handful of returners.  However, she still has a few roster openings, so anyone looking to play volleyball for the Lakers this fall should contact Van Horn at
volleyball@lakelandcc.edu.

Players of the Week

  2009-2010 Season Outlook
“This season is looking very promising,” says first year coach Jessica VanHorn when describing her young Lakers squad. “The incoming freshmen have a lot of talent.”

VanHorn is especially excited about the team’s offensive potential. The teams many strong hitters (Cidalene Henry, Amanda Rhodes, Angela Gagliano, Ellen Snyder, Elaine Bowen, Ericka Stockard, Elizabeth Breeler and Karla Bailey) give the coach a lot of flexibility.

VanHorn is also looking for strong defense at the net. “We have a tall and quick front row, which will produce many blocks,” says VanHorn.

Setting up the young hitters will be the team’s only returning player, Karisca Chambers. This setter led last year’s squad in assists and VanHorn will be looking to her to be the floor leader.

VanHorn also feels that this group of hitters plays the back row very well and that they will be an asset to the two extremely talented defensive specialists added to this year’s squad. Leona Oani and Megan Akers are expected to anchor the defense with their agility and “nothing hits the ground” mentality.

"This year, we have an all-around talented team,” says VanHorn. “The players are dedicated to the sport and to the team. I am extremely excited for this season.”
  Recap: Women's Volleyball 2008-2009

The 2008 Lady Lakers were led by first year coach Amanda Peel, who came on board a short time before the season started.  Her team had only two returning players, but they improved as the season went on and finished with a 14-22 record.

The team went 5-2 in
Lakeland’s Shannon McBride Tournament, losing only to tournament champion Lake Michigan College.  They finished 4-8 in OCCAC play, taking both matches against Lorain County Community College and Cuyahoga Community College.

Middle Hitter, Melissa Eck was named First Team All-OCCAC.  She led the Lakers in virtually every statistical category.  Her hitting percentage was 23.01% and she posted 2.874 kills per game.  She was the team’s strongest server with .495 aces per game and led the team with .486 blocks per game.  Eck was named the OCCAC player of the week on September 15.

Second year player Sonya Dominick was an OCCAC Honorable Mention.  She played both the outside and middle hitting positions, and was a strong defensive player.  She led the Lakers with 2.973 digs per game.  Dominick was the team’s captain and nominee for
Lakeland’s Female Athlete of the Year.  She was named the OCCAC player of the week on October 15.

The team raised $530 (exceeding their $500 goal) in their DIG PINK fundraiser held in October.  The event was sponsored by the Side Out Foundation which supports Breast Cancer Awareness and Research.

STAR student athletes achieve a minimum 3.0 GPA while carrying at least 12 credit hours.  Pam Ashbee was a STAR student both fall and spring semester.  Amethyst Brigham was a STAR in the fall, while Karisca Chambers and Sonya Dominick achieved STAR status in the spring.

Eck, Dominick and Alexa Kendig were recipients of the Shannon Lee McBride Scholarship.
