Artists' books are works of art realized in the form of a book. They are often published in small editions, though sometimes they are produced as one-of-a-kind objects referred to as "uniques". Artists' books have employed a wide range of forms, including scrolls, fold-outs, concertinas or loose items contained in a box as well as bound printed sheet. Artists have been active in printing and book production for centuries, but the artist's book is primarily a late 20th century form.
An Altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and/or meaning. An altered book artist takes a book (old, new, recycled or multiple) and cuts, tears, glues, burns, folds, paints, adds to, collages, rebinds, creates pop-ups, rubber-stamps, drills, bolts, and/or be-ribbons it. The artist may add pockets and niches to hold tags, rocks or, or other three-dimensional objects. Some change the shape of the book, or use multiple books in the creation of the finished piece of art. Altered books may be as simple as adding a drawing or text to a page, or as complex as creating an intricate book sculpture.
An Assemblage is a three-dimensional artistic composition made of miscellaneous objects or found materials: Found objects may exist either as utilitarian, manufactured items, or things which occur in nature, or fragments not intended as art materials. Archaeologists use the word 'assemblage' to refer to the collection of artifacts recovered from a single site. Artists use found objects because they represent the opportunity to create witty, tongue in cheek awareness about re-cycling and upcycling as a positive goal in our culture.
